Our homeland

Our homeland

An earthly paradise with history

The mountain ranges of Belles and Krousi, located by the lake banks, are the setting for a habitat of rare and diverse species of birds and mammals. These surroundings have proven to be an ideal environment for buffalos, as they love water and spend the better part of the day in the lake.

Greek Buffalo

Greek Buffalo

Bubalus Bubalis

The majority of Greece’s buffalo population is located in the area of Kerkini. According to the prevailing viewpoint the Greek buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) has been imported from Asia. They settled in the area in the 13th century and have lived there since. Others suggest that the buffalo has existed in the area for 2500 years, when Xerxis, crossing the river Strimmona, transported army supplies. They are also called “waterbuffalos”, seeing that they love water and spend the better part of day in the waters of Lake Kerkini.

Livestock Farming

Our buffalos are bred traditionally, primarily implementing free range farming where they feed on indigenous flora. Depending on weather conditions we supplement their diet with products cultivated and produced on private land, maintaining absolute control over the quality of the products throughout this phase. The breeding and living conditions of the buffalo in an environment with such lush and bountiful flora is the main contributing aspect to the quality of their meat, which is distinguished by its quality and nutritious traits, which are unique.
